About the wine
Pinot Purists have officially added Lost Canyon to the top ranks. This slow-burning, terroir-focused label has carefully cherry-picked top Sonoma vineyards for its wines and continues to build momentum. The best example of their arrival is their flamboyant Dutton Ranch bottling, which captures the cool-climate drama of the Russian River Valley in exacting detail. The smell of coastal redwoods after a rain slithers through abundant notes of candied orange peel, white blossoms and ripe Bing cherry fruit. On the palate the wine is intense without being syrupy. This diamond-bright Pinot provides red and black fruit jazz along with notions of mint chocolate, dusty earth, sassafras and black tea, while uncorking a heckuva finish that practically sizzles on the palate. It’s the signature taste of the exciting wine that makes Russian River peerless when it’s on its “A” game. Lost Canyon captures the natural energy of the appellation and they don’t bother with anything short of the most distinctive Pinot flavors. Absolutely top notch stuff that is eerily reminiscent of fan favorites from Williams-Selyem and Flowers.

About the winery
Lost Canyon is one of Sonoma’s most ardent proponents of single vineyard wine. They’re downright maniacal about hyper-clean winemaking and exacting decisions in the vineyard and the barrel room. Yet what sets them apart from the pack is their strong aversion to blending. They are terroir hounds and they believe that Russian River will emerge as a competitor to Burgundy - with the added thump of great fruit to augment the single-vineyard specifics. Judging from their critical acclaim, they’re well on their way – having earned 92-95pts from Wine Enthusiast nine times! Ironically, Lost Canyon can be found – at the Fritz Underground tasting room in Santa Rosa, where one can enjoy the no-fuss atmosphere and the high-quality wines.
About the vineyard
The Dutton Family is perhaps the most recognized name in fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All combined, they hold over 1100 acres of the best land in California for Burgundy varieties and they are the Pinot and Chardonnay equivalent of the famed Beckstoffers. If you’ve tasted and loved the quality found in bottles with the Beckstoffer name, then you know the difference good farming can make. That’s why Dutton Ranch provides grapes to the country’s top producers, an honor roll which would take pages to fully list. To mention but a few: Kistler, Merry Edwards, Flowers, Patz & Hall, Ramey. These wineries together count for several hundred scores of 90+ points. It’s not overstatement to say that you are defined by the company you keep, and Dutton Ranch only rolls with the best.
About the winemaker, Brad Longton
Brad Longton, winemaker, hails from Perth, Australia and brings experience from there (they grow pretty good Pinot down in Victoria!) as well as Northern California wineries. He has eight years of experience handcrafting, single-vineyard Lost Canyon, Fritz and Jenner Vineyards wines sourced from premier terroir of cooler appellations in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Los Carneros. Brad’s careful focus and premier viticulture practices create stunning individual wines.

“You'll be hard pressed to find a Russian River Pinot Noir for under $50 of this calibre from the great 2013 vintage. It's the best RRV Pinot Noir I've tasted in a long time. Period. There's nothing quite like Dutton Ranch when it comes to RRV Pinot Noir. The wine exudes gorgeous ripe aromatics of baked black cherries, vanilla sticks, licorice, orange zest, and bruised yellow peach - and more fruit. It's not a runaway fruit train style of Pinot Noir that exceeds 15% alc, but it doesn't skimp on bold, luscious, and exotic Pinot Noir character either. From the addictive nose, to the dense, rich palate that's full of all that we want from top-notch Pinot Noir, this Dutton Ranch juice is breathtaking. I tasted it twice, just to make sure!”
